Mothers Day Gift Guide
Lisa has done the hard work for you and created a mothers day beauty gift guide. There’s also 100% no problem if you simply need to gift to yourself also.
I haven’t written a blog post in over a year… I have been busy doing lots of daily content on IG videos, lives, started a new series called My Beauty Wardrobe where I find out the beauty industry pro’s FAVE products ( I’ve had Emma Guns, Nadine Baggott, Dominic Skinner and Lisa Potter Dixon to name a few)
Anyways if you know me I always digress so let's get back on topic to Mother’s Day. Firstly don’t feel like to have to go wild if you ain’t got the coin. We could be in similar positions, where we pretty much haven’t worked for a year 😬 I’m not here to tell you how to manage your finances that’s up to you.
I LOVE to give people gifts and awkwardly receive them. Has anyone else done the Love Language test? - if not you should. The premise is that there are five love languages: Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time, and Physical Touch. Each one is important and expresses love in its own way and once you are aware of your own it can help create a stronger bond in any type of relationship.
Anyways, let’s get to the good stuff in the actual guide. There’s something to suit all budgets and beyond.
I hope that has inspired you and helped you to navigate what the heck to get for your mum. Let me know what you get, you know how nosey I like to be. Let me know if you need a hand deciding or if there are any other questions you have. I am also totally guilty of having many of these items on my wish list 😉 The other half is things I have tried tested and LOVE.
Happy gifting
Love,
Lisa x🖤
Makeup artist interview with Anna Sokołowska
Makeup artists love to know the inside scoop from other fellow makeup artists to learn from how they work and what tips we can pick up. It is a never-ending process of learning! This week we talk to Anna Sokołowska. We met backstage at the Burberry SS19 show when we set up next to each other and have kept in touch ever since. Anna is based in Poland and often travels across Europe. Her work is flawless, fun and artful.
How did you start out in makeup?
I’ve always been a creative person with a lot of imagination. If I didn’t have something I was able to make it myself. So I guess that the eagerness to create was always there in me. In my early teens, I discovered make-up. We didn’t have YouTube back then so I learnt everything I could from magazines. But there was one situation that made me decide that I wanted to become a professional make-up artist.
It all started with a mishap. I was about to get married so I went for my make-up trial. Things got out of control and instead of looking my best I ended up with a Halloween make-up: black eyeshadow fallout all over my face. I learnt two things then: first, I needed to find another make-up artist and second, I could do it much better myself. I started with a basic course but I felt it wasn’t enough. I kept saying that in order to create beauty, you need to know ugliness. I went on to study at the Warsaw Film School and graduated with a vast knowledge of special effects make-up. My first job was a photo shoot and I loved it! So here I am, twelve years later, living my dream of creating beauty and I couldn’t be happier.
A day in the life of...What does an average day consist of?
That’s a hard question! I mostly work at photoshoots but also adverts or events so each day is totally different. But some things are the same: I never leave without breakfast and a cup of Earl Grey tea. I always take public transport so I have quite a lot of time to read books on a bus or train. In the evening it’s time to clean the brushes and get my kit ready for the next day. Sounds basic and not glamourous at all but the beauty of being a make-up artist is meeting new people and creating magic with others. Every single day is full of new adventures!
What is your signature style in your work? Is this your favourite thing to do in makeup?
I’ve always described my style as minimalism with a twist. Every face is different and I believe it’s important to highlight that in make-up. However, I hate clichés so I always bring a twist to everything I do – it maybe emphasising model’s features or adding something characteristic to the look. I also love playing with patterns and shapes but I strongly believe that beauty is in simplicity.
Your favourite products:
Skincare: Clarins – Beauty Flash Balm, Missha – Super Aqua Cell Renew (Korean skincare – I can talk about it for hours)
Foundation: MAC – Face and Body (so basic but so versatile!)
Concealer: Laura Mercier – Secret Camouflage concealer (does pretty much everything)
Mascara: Max Factor – 2000 Calories (in my kit since… the beginnings of time)
Eyeshadow: Pat McGrath – Mothership Palette (try it once and you’ll fall in love)
Eyeliner: Inglot – Gel Eyeliner (doesn’t budge, doesn’t smudge – unbreakable! Plus Inglot is a Polish company so I treat it as a part of my heritage)
Lip product: humble lanolin (the best moisturiser in the world)
Brush: Rae Morris – Lash Liner Smudger (so handy!)
What should every woman own in her makeup bag?
A good concealer and red lipstick. These two things are enough to create gorgeous, statement make-up and look amazing all day long.
What's your advice to someone wanting to be a makeup artist?
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Fear stops you from experimenting and meeting new people. The most amazing things are created by accident! (if you don’t trust me, think: penicillin – that was a gamechanger) Don’t panic, it’s just make-up, not a surgery. And one more thing, above all: be kind. Hard work and kindness will get you far.
What’s been your OMG wake me up, pinch me am I dreaming moment?
Getting a phone call and hearing that I was going to do a Burberry show the next day. I thought it was a dream and, honestly, sometimes I think I’m still dreaming because it was just too perfect to be true.
What is the greatest challenge you have overcome in your career?
Believe or not but self-doubt and low self-esteem. These things can drag you down more than an inability to create a perfect winged eyeliner look. Once I decided to be my own best friend, amazing things started to happen. Try it!
Scenario: You have arrived at a job, your case has gone missing at the airport. You have 15mins to grab essentials. What are your 5 essentials do you pick up to complete the look?
Losing my kit at an airport is my biggest fear ever! But 5 essentials is more than enough to create a great look. Weleda’s Skinfood may act not only as skincare, but I often apply it on lips to moisturise them and an additional layer on cheeks acts as a highlighter. Laura Mercier – Secret Camouflage will even out the skin. Another product is Shape and Shade Brow Tint from MAC in Taupe to create flawless and natural-looking brows. Charlotte Tilbury lipstick in Pillow Talk will add some colour to lips and will act as a blusher. Shu Uemura eyelash curler is a must! No look is complete without a pair of well-curled eyelashes.
How do you like to organise your kit?
I’m a big fan of organising things! I love everything to be spotless, easy to reach and have its own place. Most of my make-up products are in a case with dividers (this one with zippers – you must have seen one already). I use Muji containers to keep cotton pads and buds in order. I also depot lipsticks and concealers and put them in palettes. It’s handy and I know exactly where to find things. Mykitco organisers keep all the rest of the products divided into categories. I actually believe that the lighter the kit, the better so I’m on a constant quest to downsizing it.
What's your best kit hack?
Depotting! It saves space and… your back!
How do you set up your work station?
I keep my kit really compact so setting up my work station takes me up to 5 minutes. And if it’s possible I ask my model to sit in front of a window: daylight is my best friend. During the make-up process, I tend to put all the things where they belong. This way I don’t waste time looking for something and it makes it quicker to pack all my kit at the end of the day.
What trend should be left behind in 2020?
Big, fat, black eyebrows that don’t go well with anything. And ridiculously long, fake eyelashes with a lot of volume.

Makeup artist interview with Phoebe Taylor
Makeup artists love to know the inside scoop from other fellow makeup artists to learn from how they work and what tips we can pick up. It is a never-ending process of learning! This week we meet Phoebe Taylor, who I met at MAC and again on a show at fashion week many years later. Phoebe is an artist of many talents from a paired back beauty to the precise razor-sharp liner in addition to bucket loads of character, kind and always has you in stitches.
How did you start out in makeup?
Well, I did musical theatre as a teen and always loved doing my makeup, so I guess there was a natural ability, I also loved to play dress-ups at home and just become characters. I never considered makeup as a career as I thought I was going to be an actress. When I finished school I took a year off and it came to me that I wanted to do a course, so tada! here I am 13 years later!
A day in the life of...What does an average day consist of?
Funnily enough, I don’t have an average day, which is what I love about my job! Having said that, it can be anywhere between working with private clients, shooting an editorial, ecomm or campaign, assisting other well-established makeup artist’s on campaigns, editorials or it could be fashion month and I am schlepping around a city like a madwoman with a kit in tow and some Redbull!
What is your signature style in your work? Is this your favourite thing to do in makeup?
I get asked this all the time and I put it down to more the subject aka the Face, as every face tells a different story and can suit different looks. I do love doing a beautiful dewy skin, a smokey eye and a liner — eek everything then ?!
Your favourite products :
Skincare - Embryolisse or Avene Cicalfate for moisturiser
Foundation - Chanel Vitalumiere, Nars Sheer Glow, Shiseido Synchro glow
Concealer - Nars Radiant Creamy concealer
Mascara - Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat lashes
Eyeshadow- Hmmmmm soooo hard I have a mix of everything, Anastasia, MAC, Inglot, Charlotte Tilbury
Eyeliner - Costa Riche from MAC, Illamasqua gel, DHC liquid pen
Lip product - I do love MAC lippies, oh and Makeup forever lip pencils
Brush- love Chanel brushes
What should every woman own in her makeup bag?
Lip balm and a fab mascara
What's your advice to someone wanting to be a makeup artist?
Do research, figure out who’s career you like and what section of the industry you want to work in, ask other artists about their careers, and get as many opinions as possible. Everyone will have a different experience however it’s great to hear to help you navigate what you want. I would also really ask the question WHY is it I am wanting to be an artist? Have a serious conversation with yourself, because like any creative industry it requires a lot of dedication and passion.
What’s been your OMG wake me up, pinch me am I dreaming moment?
Omg, there has been soooo many! I think when I got to do Courtney Love and Paris Hilton’s makeup, um being in Jean Paul Gaultier’s last couture show! Sooo mannny
What is the greatest challenge you have overcome in your career?
I would say comparisons, we always seem to compare ourselves to others and that’s a slippery slope. I think also suffering from a bit of imposters syndrome and being like “why me ?! Like I am not even good” I think as artists we care so much about art and putting our all in and it’s important to remember that you won’t always be everyone’s cup of tea and it’s not always personal, it’s just business and that’s totally ok!
Scenario: You have arrived at a job, your case has gone missing at the airport. You have 15mins to grab essentials. What are your 5 essentials do you pick up to complete the look?
Well because I always hand carry my brushes I’m sorted there, but I would say -
Bobbi Brown Palette Moisturiser
Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes
Le maquillage pro cream palette for cheeks and eyes!
How do you like to organise your workstation?
Well it tends to change constantly, but so that I can avoid too much pack up I like all things in bags to stand up so I can see it and grab products quickly and try and pack it back at the same time (doesn’t always work out that way!)
What's your best kit hack?
Decant!!!! I love to have everything in one place (i did a whole series over the summer of me doing this tedious but necessary task on my Instagram)
What trend should be left behind in 2020?
Too much of everything- sharpie brows, baking, too much powder, too much highlight, grotesque lashes Bla bla bla!

Skin prep for makeup artists DRY SKIN
I share my tips so you can feel more confident in skin prep for dry skin. Dry skin is a challenging skin type to work with on set due to the lack of sebum the skin produces, dry texture can grip and look dull. So, getting back to basics is key to plump it up! I talk about particular products that I have used and worked well in my experience, bear in mind that there are many more options to play with. Practice makes perfect in terms of what you use and what works but if you know what to look out for it will certainly help.

How to identify a dry skin type:
Areas of the skin are flakey particularly around the nose, forehead, eyebrows and occasionally cheeks
Skin can enhance the texture of fines line caused by dehydration.
The skin texture can be rough with possible eczema or psoriasis.
Skin complexion can look dull and skin is not plump
Pores are small and skin can look tight.
Those dry areas may also be red and potentially the skin is thin making it easily irritated
Skin prep for a hydrated and smooth base to apply makeup
Apply eye cream or an eye mask whilst prepping the rest of the skin Pixi’s DetoxifEYE hydrogel eye patches so it has time to perform its magic.
Start with a gentle exfoliation in the areas require it to remove the dead skin avoiding anything too hard or stipping. The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% masque or Caudalie Glycolic Peel Mask will mildly exfoliate the dead skin whilst not being abrasive. Leave it on for 10 mins and rinse off with Avene water. Warning- if your client has particularly sensitive skin please avoid this.
Alternatively, for a more gentle exfoliation is applying some moisturiser to a sponge, biodegradable wipe, cotton bud or cotton pad to spot exfoliate areas and don't forget the eyebrow area, leave for a few minutes whilst you do something else then gently massage it to get rid of the dead skin. DO NOT scrub aggressively. The Eucerin Aquaphor Soothing Skin Balm and La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 Soothing Repairing Balm are two I have got on well with for this.
Hydrate the skin with a spray as its light. I love the MAC fix + spray, it contains glycerin which is a humectant. A humectant draws moisture from its environment and holds onto it.
A light hyaluronic acid serum aka another humectant to hydrate and sooth the skin. I swear by the Hada Labo super hyaluronic acid, it's not too tacky or thick. Be considered with a light hand and touches on the skin when applying products, so patting products in gently helping push products on and avoid the skin getting red. Ensure to remember to apply products to the neck.
Apply the moisturiser and let it sit on the skin for a few minutes so the skin feels supple and you can see if need to add another layer. A good type of moisturiser to choose is one that leaves a residue like Embryolisse or Wedela skin food. Another good one which is a lighter texture is The Ordinary Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA as it mimics the skins. Avoid fragranced products as this is more likely to cause the skin to react.
Another layer you can add is a facial oil, The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane. It is a lightweight oil that is an emollient which helps prevent moisture loss, think of it as a moisture gatekeeper. This is great if the client has particularly dry skin and if you have a lot of makeup changes to ensure the skin stays fresh.
Avoid any heavy powder, be strategic where you apply it and work with creams as it will make the skin look fresh. The By Terry Hyaluronic Hydra-Powder is a good light option with our friend Hyalroinc in it.
Those are my top tips for you! Let me know if you have any other additions that I should know about in the comments below.

Skin prep for makeup artists OILY SKIN
Pro Makeup Artist Lisa Caldognetto shares her tips so you can feel more confident in skin prep for oily skin. Oily skin can be a challenging skin type to work with due to the amount of sebum on the skin that continually replenishes. Getting back to basics is key as knowledge is power
I share my tips so you can feel more confident in skin prep for oily skin. Oily skin can be a challenging skin type to work with on set due to the amount of sebum on the skin that continually replenishes. Getting back to basics is key as knowledge is power. I talk about particular products that I have used and worked well in my experience, bear in mind that there are many more options to play with. Practice makes perfect in terms of what you use and what works but if you know what to look out for it will certainly help.
How to identify an oily skin type:
Skin will have sebum everywhere on it, not just the t zone.
Eyelids will have oil on them.
Pores are visibly enlarged, especially on the nose, chin and forehead.
Blackheads are visible on the nose.
Makeup simply slides off when the skin isn't suitably prepped.
It can have areas of dryness due to dehydration and a variety of other things.
Your goal is to help control the oil before applying any makeup
Cleanse the skin, remove all existing oil on the skin and eyelids with a micellar with a cotton pad. Bioderma Sébium H2O Purifying Micellar Cleansing Water
Spray hydration into to the skin, its light and simply wakes the skin up. I love the MAC fix + spray, it contains glycerin which is a humectant and in simple terms traps moisture and draws it deeper into the skin.
BHA toner will help to gently exfoliate the skin, calm skin and help to remove excess sebum. A good ingredient to look out for is salicylic acid and can reduce sebum secretion. Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant a light toner that will make the skin look brighter and quick to use.
A light hyaluronic serum is enough to hydrate but not overwhelm the skin, promotes a proper moisture balance in the skin and prevents the over-production of oil. One that never lets me down is the Hada Labo super hyaluronic acid, it's not too tacky or thick.
Moisturiser- less is more! Avoid rich creams at all costs. Use something designed for an oily skin type and is lightweight. You may find that the skin is hydrated enough with the serum and can skip any moisturiser. The skin should look plump and not 'wet'. La Roche-Posay Effaclar MAT+ Moisturiser Oily Skin a light formula that contains micro powder to help absorb excess oil another one I use is the Murad Oil and Pore Control Mattifier which feels a litter heavier to the touch.
Primers can sometimes simply disagree with the skin especially with a slip as this and cause more issues, so I tend to skip this.
Use something to prime the eyes, MAC 24 hour eye base is fantastic. This is a clear formula with plenty of tack that helps control the oil on the eyes. This has so much grip it would be worth dusting a light powder on top to help blend shadows.
A hero for a minimal look and great for all skin tones as it is clear is the MAC Matte Creme and it almost behaves like powder as it reduces the appearance of shine on the skin.
Dust a fine layer of setting powder before applying any base makeup. MAC Blot powder is the best for oil control.
Touch up
Blot skin with blotting papers, a clean brush, puff or sponge before you top up powder on set as you may not need more powder. The powder will build up, look cakey and potentially oxidise ( change and go a few shades darker) as you layer. I still have a supply of the discontinued MAC blot papers, which I haven’t had to replace yet.
If you don’t want to use a powder a good alternative is the Rae Morris Invisible Mattifier, this is a silicone-based formula that mattes the skin and gives it a smooth finish. This is best used on its own and not with a powder.
Those are my top tips for you! Let me know if you have any other great additions in the comments below.

Makeup artists love to know the inside scoop from other fellow makeup artists to learn from how they work and what tips we can pick up. It is a never-ending process of learning! This week we meet Faye Bluff, our paths crossed at fashion week and we have been in touch since. Faye’s flawless skin work is beautiful and uses this as a base to add interesting elements within the makeup to spice things up. She is also the founder of skill swap creative which is a network for professional creatives offering workshops to exchange skills, expertise and knowledge.
How did you start out in makeup?
I studied a diploma in hair & media makeup back up in Manchester and then went on to work for NARS on a counter in Selfridges. I always knew I wanted to get into fashion so I chose the brand carefully because I knew this could be an in - and it was! I worked my way up and became part of the events team, moved down to London and regularly represented the brand backstage at London and Paris fashion weeks assisting some of the most amazing artists in the industry like Val Garland, Andrew Gallimore & Lucia Pieroni. My time working with NARS was invaluable because I had so much access to different skin types and tones to practice on, you get quick very fast working on a counter! They also taught me invaluable backstage and on set etiquette, it was almost like a fast track into the fashion industry for me.
A day in the life of...What does an average day consist of?
I’m either going 200mph or 0mph. This is something I’m still trying to learn... balance! But if I’m working it’s early call times, long days, keeping on top of my kit, making sure it’s clean, organised and stocked up. Cleaning brushes. I try and give myself admin days and rest days, when you’re freelance it’s easy to get caught up in work but you’ve got to make hay whilst the sun is shining!
What is your signature style in your work? Is this your favourite thing to do in makeup?
I love skin. I obsess over it, I can only create a makeup “look” if the skin is as close to perfect as I can get it, otherwise I find it distracting. I like bold shapes and colours so if the skin is done well I find makes a canvas to properly showcase that.
Your favourite products :
Skincare
NARS multi-action hydrating toner - the freaking best!
Foundation
Face & Body or NARS tinted moisturiser
Concealer
Dermacolour
Mascara
Mac extended play
Eyeshadow
MAC, Surratt, Shu Uemura, Anastasia, NARS - I’m not TOO fussy with shadows it more about the colour
Eyeliner
Surratt auto-graphique liner for liquid, it’s heaven. Mambo from NARS is an all-time fave - it’s a beautiful silky, smudgy, rusty brown I use it all the time!
Lip product
Kiko scrub and peel wipes - or any scrub. You could have the most luxurious lipstick in the world but it’s still going to look like crap on a flakey lip
Brush
Surratt Smokey eye brushes Or a good old 217 from MAC
What should every woman own in her makeup bag?
Eyelash curlers
What's your advice to someone wanting to be a makeup artist?
Do you, don’t follow everyone else, don’t ever stop learning and work really, really, really hard.
What’s been your OMG wake me up, pinch me am I dreaming moment?
To be honest, every time someone approaches me for a job feels if like a pinch-me moment. I’m from a little seaside town in North Wales and didn’t think I’d ever actually do the job that I’m doing. So it’s just great to get recognised and requested for your craft. I ticked off some real personal milestones this year though, I worked with mother, Pat McGrath, she’s just incredible energy and talent. I was also chosen to be part of the team for Chanel which has always been a dream of mine.
What is the greatest challenge you have overcome in your career?
Myself. I’m so hard on myself which can be exhausting but at the same time, it constantly pushes me to learn and improve.
Scenario: You have arrived at a job, your case has gone missing at the airport. You have 15mins to grab essentials. What are your 5 essentials do you pick up to complete the look?
Moisturiser - for removing, hydration, glow. A concealer that can be sheered out. Lipstick, probably a red, that I can use on the cheeks and eyes too. Gel liner, that I can paint and use for mascara if I need toAnd and eyeshadow palette - does that count??
How do you like to organise your workstation?
I use a case with all my basics in, I kind of know what I like now so I’ll mainly work from that, and then have all my extras for the specific job laid out next to it. I have a very specific way I like so set up Every time, that way when I’m pushed for time and have to work quickly I know exactly where everything is. I’m SUPER anal and organised when it comes to my kit.
What's your best kit hack?
Try not to overpack, it comes with time and experience but not having something is sometimes a blessing in disguise because it makes you think out of the box.
How do you set up your work station?
Brushes, mini kit, hygiene at the front then everything else to hand
What trend should be left behind in 2020?
Doing makeup a certain way just, because... because you’ve seen someone do it that way so now that’s how you do it. WHY are you using that product, that brush, that technique?? If you don’t know why leave it in 2019!

Value your worth as a makeup artist
Makeup artists love to know the inside scoop from fellow makeup artists to learn from how they work and what tips we can pick up When you work for yourself it can feel lonely and hard to make decisions about jobs as you don't have a team you work within. This space is to help makeup artists feel empowered to better their career. This blog post is about knowing how much to charge!
Wherever you are in your makeup career you must ALWAYS promise yourself and me to value your worth.
A regular question I see in forum groups, get asked by fellow makeup artists or and one I ask are about rates and how much should be charged. Each area of makeup has a vast variety of potential rates from assisting, fashion, bridal to film work. It is impossible to cross-correlate the different genres as they are completely different bodies of work as there are so many variables.
In our creative world, there are multiple ways of getting paid, money, connection and experience. If you are early on in your makeup career you may think you need to be paid a certain amount of money from a job like assisting, however, its the other currencies you should consider before accepting a job. Do not be naive about how the industry works, know that connection and experience will pay your bills further down the line.
When you are early on in your career you lack experience and this will be reflected in the rates you are offered. You may not want to take the job or assist due to the low pay, what you need to consider are the people you will meet on the production, team and brand. We work in a social industry where connections are vital and if things go well you may form a strong working relationship then work with them again down the line or for many years to come. You will also gain valuable experience as you have never done this type of job before, the experience offsets the monetary value of the job and is more of an investment. I have put many hours into assisting for free, exchanging my time to learn from highly regarded artists in the industry. I learnt an invaluable amount of things on set that shaped the artist I am today. So when the next opportunities arise you have built your experience, therefore, would be reflected in what you charge.
As a tenured artist, you wouldn't do the jobs you did at the beginning of your career. You should stop accepting work that is paying below what you are worth, considering you no longer need the connection and growth to prove your worth. Someone is trying to get you to work on for free or at a rate that is much lower than the value of the job. You must at the very least, negotiate the agreement. This will feel uncomfortable but you haven’t spent all those years investing, in your skill, practising and spending thousands on your kit alongside education to not be able to stand up for yourself. You have the creativity, negotiate with not only money but the experience and connection available to you, therefore you use it. This will look different in all scenarios, it could be cross exposure on social media or through credits with products.
Be brave and say no, you are devaluing your worth, jeopardising your future work, opportunities for other artists and for future generations. It is important more than ever to be transparent about rates amongst fellow makeup artists. We are all in this together and aren't each others competition, we must empower and elevate what we do. Call on those connections you have made along the way. Your value doesn’t decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth.
Invest in yourself to develop and grow your social network. Measure decision making by weighing up against three key principles of money, connection and experience to aid guide you in deciding. Expose yourself to uncomfortable situations to push your growth in the long run, wether that's meeting with a photographer or going to a PR event. You need to learn to respect your growth to gain employers trust in the future, they can see the investment in yourself. Treat your makeup career as seriously as a 9-5 job, if you treat it like a hobby, you work it like a hobby and get paid like its a hobby, so you shouldn't be surprised this.
Recognise when you are new to the game you need to value connection and experience over money as that will cut your growth. Whilst further down the line these values will help steer you along the way.
I would love to hear how you navigate this topic, so please comment below.

2019 ended with a model recommends
In this video, Lisa Caldognetto shows us how to do three easy makeup updates using bits and pieces we probably already own on Ruth Crilly aka a model recommends. A classic red lip, the easiest smokey eye and a way of using some of the shadow colours we might not usually touch. All with brilliant tips and tricks that Lisa knows from her day job as a session makeup artist. Enjoy!
Happy new year all, a new decade. It’s a breath of fresh air, blow away the cobwebs of the past ten and continue on our journey. Last year I befriended and worked with the most excellent, fun, hilarious, gorgeous Ruth Crilly aka a model recommends who conveniently lives up the road from me.
Ruth invited me on her YouTube channel, we shot two videos in December. Before we hit record I got nervous, my mouth felt as dry as Sahara desert and my hands like a clammy mess. I took a deep breath and we were rolling, I slipped into doing what I do best talking about what I love & have a passion for, you guessed it Makeup!
I hope you enjoy the video where I show you three makeup update on how to use products that you may well already own and aren’t sure how to use.
I will post part two in a few weeks time. Let me know what other videos you would like to see, its always a joy to make them!

Collaborating on a book! Fashion Backstage to Runway
Makeup artists love to know the inside scoop from other fellow makeup artists to learn from how they work and what tips we can pick up. It is a never-ending process of learning!
Find out about Lisa’s exciting news here
This Summer during a spell of time between sad news and ill health, I got a DM that provided much needed positive focus and distraction.
Jodie Austen aka Peachy Stylist wanted to see if I was interested in being part of a creative project photographer, Paul Cunningham was putting together and looking for a makeup artist alongside hairdresser and model to share their experience of the reality of and expertise in what it's like working backstage and offer some insight into those wanting to work in the fashion industry as well as being a great addition for the coffee table.
I eagerly found out more information from the photographer, got a copy of the initial PDF and began writing my draft. This is really real I thought, time to work. So many thoughts came to mind like how do I put down 20 or so seasons worth of fashion week experiences into x amount of words?! I worked my first season in 2009 and today I can barely remember what I did yesterday. Do I even remember what happened as it is generally a blur? Is this going to happen, my words become published in a book?
I directed the anxiety I felt into excitement in reliving the shows. I put pen to paper vigorously tapped the keyboard trying to not let thoughts of memories escape my mind as I typed. I managed to turn it all around fairly quickly, I quietly surprised myself and sent to various friends who have experience in editing. Before I knew it the final version was complete and the next time I would see it would be in a hard copy!
It was wonderful to reflect on memories and moments of madness I had forgotten about. This has been a highlight of 2019 and a wonderful milestone in my career I honestly can't quite believe it *pinches myself.*
Dreams take a long time to manifest and from the outside can seem to simply appear and happen minus all the years of hard work. I am learning to own it and respect the outcome rather than feel undeserving of it.
This is a perfect addition to your book collection and available on amazon. Let me know if you get a copy and tag me in your pictures.
Thanks,

I would say that Zahra’s makeup style matches her fun and energetic personality that is infectious.
How did you start out in makeup?
I decided to go back to uni to do a Design Media makeup: Prosthetics and SFX course but you needed an art background which I didn’t have. Luckily as I applied late and it was mid-September, they had had dropouts and needed to fill spaces. I was the only one in my year without art A-level or foundation.
A day in the life of...What does an average day consist of?
The thing I treasure most about what I do is that there is no average day. My job has allowed me to go to some really cool places, and I constantly have “is this actually my job?!” moments
What is your signature style in your work? Is this your favourite thing to do in makeup?
I still get excited about making someone’s skin look super gorgeous and luxurious. Its the feature people notice the most, and great skin/ makeup can give you superhero confidence.
Your favourite products :
Skincare I couldn’t live without Estee lauder micro essence. It’s my secret weapon. Also, love La Roche posay effaclar matte.
Foundation Concealer Nars radiant creamy concealer, MAC studio finish and YSL touché eclat- such a beautiful product. Recently have started mixing it with concealer for that dreamy airbrushed coverage!
Mascara It’s a tie between Mac extended play perm me up and Milk Kush mascara.
Eyeshadow MAC Cosmetics has the best balance between payoff and blendability. I love pigmented shadows but not when it’s difficult to blend, or they’re chalky and don’t stay on!
Eyeliner Clinique gel liner is super black and doesn’t dry out!
Lip product I don’t know where I’d be without Ruby woo. I use it almost on every shoot to achieve a natural lip tone. Applied softly with a blending brush it’s the perfect colour. And of course as the ultimate statement red
Brush More of a tool, I love beauty blenders. There is nothing like it and worth every penny!
What should every woman own in her makeup bag?
Eyelash curlers! Instant eye lift!
What's your advice to someone wanting to be a makeup artist?
Learn how to make people feel good, and be a good listener! Not just with your ears.. listen to your client’s body language and let it guide your makeup.
What’s been your OMG wake me up, pinch me am I dreaming moment? The most recent OMG moment I had was seeing my makeup on a big screen, on a musician I respect, in front of 25k people.
What is the greatest challenge you have overcome in your career?
Starting out freelance was a challenge. You have to really believe in yourself or at least have people who believe in you, to tell you “keep going” “you are good enough” when you constantly doubt yourself.
Scenario: Your case has gone missing at the airport and due to start a job as soon as you get there. You have 15mins to grab essentials. What are your 5 essentials do you pick up to complete the look?
If I’m going on a shoot? concealer, illuminating moisturiser, lipstick, brow powder, powder.
How do you like to organise your kit?
One big essentials bag and everything else in smaller bags. Oh and Label everything!
What trend should be left behind in 2019?
The abuse of Highlighter and sharpie brows.
Where can we follow you online?
Thank you for your time and sharing with us Zahra, it is greatly appreciated!

Building your makeup kit: 5 foundation essentials
Lisa Caldognetto’s guide of the top items for your kit for different skin types finishes, textures and coverages. Skin is a crucial element of any ALL make up looks and relevant to every job in your career. Foundation is a good place to invest in your makeup kit, due to the quality of pigment in a product.
Skin is a crucial element of any ALL make up looks and relevant to every job in your career. Foundation is a good place to invest in your makeup kit, due to the quality of pigment in a product. There are so many products available on the market, however, I’m going to guide you through the top items for your kit for different skin types finishes, textures and coverages.
A great tip for when you are building your foundation wardrobe is to buy a total of 6 shades in a variety of tones, neutral and golden base, its also worth carrying a white. You can easily mix colours to shade match, your shade palette should have an option for every skin tone. Another consideration to keep things cost-effective is to split the cost with fellow artists and decant them. I did this when starting out and apply for makeup artist discounts where you can. Alternatively, get samples where you can for tones that you might not use as often if you don’t ask you don’t get.
1 MAC Face & Body
This is a cult classic and has a fantastic shade range. It looks great in person and photographs beautifully.
The texture reads like a second skin and there’s a real secret to using this effectively. When you squeeze this out it is a watery texture, with the heat this emulsifies. Pop it in your fingertips and rub, the consistency transforms and looks like satin. The formula is easy to build and layer from sheer coverage to medium and is long-wearing. As the name suggests, this works as body makeup for flawless leg or arms.
2 Estée Lauder- Double Wear. Maximum Cover Camouflage Makeup
Formulated with a high pigment, it can cover most things due to its high coverage, super long wear and matte finish. Due to its matte texture, it is a great product as you can achieve any finish by mixing and it’s the best to know to mix with something like cold cream or moisturiser to sheer out. This will lighten the coverage and give a radiant finish. This was one of Charlotte Tilbury’s favourite blends before creating her own brand. This is a great option for oily skin and comes in a limited shade range.
3 Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturisers Oil-Free
A demi-matte skin formula that gives a skin-like look whilst blurs skin texture. The formula helps to control oil with sheer buildable coverage, it enhances the skin rather than hide it. It comes in a generous shade range and the formula works well on a normal to oily or combination skin.
4 Deciem the ordinary serum foundation
Aside from its affordable price tag and luxury payoff. Serum skincare like texture that blurs the skin making it look smooth with medium coverage. This foundation is easy to blend with its water-like feel and a semi-matte finish. It comes in a wide variety of shades and they're free of parabens, sulfates, and they're cruelty-free.
5 Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation
Ideal for red carpet which looks flawless in person and in photographs. Inspired by charmeuse silk and it delivers on that, with a luminous refined texture and lightweight, buildable coverage. The formula works on all skin types, any age and skin tone. It applies and blends effortlessly on to the skin.
You do not require all these formulas in your kit! One fuller coverage and sheer will get you off to a good start. There is my breakdown of go to’s, obviously, skin prep plays hand in hand to the end results you get with the foundation, have a read of my skincare kits favourites. Let me know what your favourites are in the comments below.

1 How did you start out in makeup?
I was working as a graphic designer in Richmond for about 3 years until I was made redundant. I wanted to stay in the field but I had always had a passion for all things makeup/fashion/beauty so I decided to enrol in an 8-week course at Glauca Rossi School of Makeup.
I began testing & a couple of months later I got a call from them asking if I wanted to go for an interview with MAC which was coming to London. I jumped at the chance & landed the job of one of the first 4 MAC artists in Harvey Nichols. From that point onwards it was a dream. I was working on the shows for London Fashion Week, meeting awesome & inspirational artists who are to this day great friends & learning my craft on a daily basis.
One day I got a chance through a friend to work at MTV on their live shows which was the start of my freelance career & I’ve never looked back...
2 A day in the life of...What does an average day consist of?
My day to day can be pretty random as most freelance artists will agree!
My day could consist of a photoshoot, an event or a tv filming day. I do love my job!
3 What is your signature style in your work? Is this your favourite thing to do in makeup?
I think my style reflects my clients which is pretty cool, fresh with an element of trend thrown into the mix.
I like to change things up all the time & I am lucky enough to have amazing clients that trust me & let me do my thing!
Gorgeous glowing skin is my staple; I love a smoked out eye. I love a clean skin & bold lip.
4 Your favourite products :
Skincare
I love oils to prep skin. I’m currently using Vanderohe which is hand blended & 100% plant-based.
Foundation
Mac Face & Body, Becca Aqua Luminous and Suqqu
Concealer
Glossier Stretch concealer, Armani Power Fabri and Delilah Take Cover.
Mascara
Marc Jacobs and Chanel
Eyeshadow
Too many to mention!! I have an addiction for all cream eyeshadows
Brushes
Sonia G, My Kitco and Real Techniques.
5 What should every woman own in her makeup bag?
I always carry Tatcha Dewy Skin Mist & concealer!
6 What's your advice to someone wanting to be a makeup artist?
There’s no magic formula. Hard work & dedication is key. Working for a good makeup brand helps to develop your skills on a daily basis & gain inspiration from other artists...We are always learning.
Assisting other makeup artists will give you the skill sets necessary to develop you into the artist you want to become. Research!! Research is not about following Instagram trends, it’s about history...(research) the eras, the people, the styles that continue to inspire all artists.
7 What’s been your OMG wake me up, pinch me am I dreaming moment?
I’m very thankful for many moments. Working at MTV on all their shows & meeting amazing people I work with to this day. Every time a magazine cover I’ve worked on hits the stands! My work on Eylure packaging every time I walk into a drug store. So many things...
8 What is the greatest challenge you have overcome in your career?
I think my greatest challenge is continuing to make a freelance career for myself & building it through word of mouth. It’s taken 20+ years of hard work & I'm still here!
Social media is a newer challenge for me; it breeds anxiety that you’re not good enough, not successful enough, not busy enough. It plays on people’s insecurities & self-esteem, including me. There’s no easy road but I try not to get sucked in.
I still believe in being true to yourself & your craft is the way forward.
9 Scenario: You have arrived at a job, your case has gone missing at the airport. You have 15mins to grab essentials. What are your 5 essentials do you pick up to complete the look?
Blimey! Have you seen what I carry??😂
1. A face oil
2. Concealer for imperfections & you can dilute with a facial oil for a light base.
3. A cream colour base that you can multitask with for eyes, lips & cheeks.
4. A mascara, naturally!
5. A creamy eyeliner that you can smudge out for a heavier, smoky eye.
10 How do you like to organise your kit?
I’m not great at organising my kit because I’m always adding new things to it! I do use MyKitco clear bags & pods to organise my products which are great!
11 What trend should be left behind in 2019?
I would say the overuse of airbrushing tools & apps. Bring back skin texture!

Makeup artist survival for when its quiet
Makeup artists love to know the inside scoop from fellow makeup artists to learn from how they work and what tips we can pick up. This is my fourth year as a sole freelance artist and I get those times where my diary is empty, with dribbles of work here and there alongside the deaded "released" from a job. One of the hardest things to do in freelance life is managing those quiet periods.
This is my fourth year as a sole freelance artist and I get those times where my diary is empty, with dribbles of work here and there alongside the deaded "released" from a job. One of the hardest things to do in freelance life is managing those quiet periods. Anxiety is high, worrying about paying your rent, putting fuel in your car, topping up your oyster, wondering when will the jobs come in and feeling guilty about having fun particularly if it involves spending money.
I want to share what I have learnt, what I try a̶n̶d̶ ̶f̶a̶i̶l̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶d̶o̶ ̶and am still learning to do. These are things I try to do during quieter periods as having these pockets of time are precious. One of my mantras to myself is "talk to yourself like you would to someone you love" so be softer and kinder. Strap in and hold on for this rollercoaster journey with me.
1 Spend time with partner, friends and family
It's important to connect with your people and have some fun. Make the most of being able to spend quality time with people you don't get to see as often as you like. Text and call them, let them know you are free to hang out. It is easy to overlook and take for granted how important these relationships are. These relationships are crucial as they help increase feelings of belonging, purpose, increased levels of happiness, reduced levels of stress, improved self-worth and confidence.
2 Save & prepare
Squirrelling money away whilst your earning is key and not only for your tax but for these dry spells. Have a good understanding of your outgoings, how much a month it costs you to live, have some treats and have fun (don't forget about the fun part, as you don't simply work hard for that sole reason alone.) In an ideal world having up to 6 months of this fund will help you feel prepared and worry less. Financial planning gives you confidence, seek the advice of financial advisors or clued up friends/family that will help you number crunch.
3 Set intentions
Reflect on experiences from the previous year to gauge the future. Think about the kind of work you want to get for the year of work ahead, the clients you want to work with. Write these down and be specific with details of the things, people, places and experiences you want. It is helpful to keep your concise list along with images somewhere you will see them often to keep you focused. These intentions are private and only for you, it doesn't matter how big or mad they are or what your mum thinks. There's no right or wrong for what these could look like for you. YOU GOT THIS
4 Update website
Give your website some TLC! Update written content, upload all images you haven't had time or the headspace to before now and remove any that arent relevant. Keep at the forefront of your mind the clients you want to attract and ensure that your website echoes this. The themes, layout, colours, fonts that you can use to reflect your style and aesthetic. I use squarespace to host my website as it’s easy and looks sleek. Your website should be like a fashion magazine like Vogue, beautiful imagery that tells stories and arranged in categories that make sense and tell a story to clients.
5 Network and community
Spend time with and talk to fellow makeup artists. Having a community in our line of work is important to keep you sane and have support from, particularly as we are working solo on most jobs. Have trust and respect with it, be open, honest and transparent these fellow artists get it. Utilise this time to connect with new and current agencies, clients fellow creatives such as photographers, hairstylists, PRs and nail technicians. Check-in with them, send some new work, arrange to meet for coffee, spend time collaborating on a test shoot together. All these things are free to do and take time from your day, ignore that voice in your head, quit procrastinating and send that email.
6 Spark creative inspiration
Make some space for yourself to be creative and inspired. This can be as simple as going for a walk, look up and around, feel the beauty and breathe it in. Writing in any capacity can be a great way to gather your thoughts and express yourself. Drawing and painting are activities that I personally thoroughly enjoy because when I am in the zone I can't think, I am present with what I am doing. I put on some music, clear space and get out my materials to face that blank piece of paper. Go that exhibition or see that band that you have been meaning to go to see. I am sure you have many other activities you enjoy doing.
7 Put your phone down
In an age where digital and social media is our everyday environment, everything or most of what we see is a curated, edited and manicured feed. A lot of what we see on those squares isn't real, what you see might not be current, they may not be as busy as you think- that's all ok. We naturally compare whilst we scroll which doesn't do our mental state any good. We all know how we can easily lose hours whilst mindlessly scrolling and may notice a low mood that comes with it. "Oh, they have done this, what am I doing wrong?" Unfollow accounts that make you feel rubbish. Put your phone down or try to restrict the amount you are on Instagram, or whatever else you use. Try to focus on comparing yourself to yourself, yesterdays work to see how far you have come.
8 Give back
Our job is so rewarding in being able to help anyone feel better about themselves through a small ritual of applying skincare or a lipstick, its so powerful. Dedicate your time, working with charities is a great way to do this, one that stands out is "Look good, feel better" a charity that works with people who are struggling with the way their cancer treatment has affected their looks.
Another way is to invest time in your community, is to create videos or blog content to help educate others.
9 Your worth
Do not undersell yourself by feeling desperate to take any job that lands in your inbox undercut your rates. Always value your worth! Do not be afraid to ask for budgets and to ultimately say no. It can be so disheartening and cause too much resentment that you did that job, stick to your boundary of no. Trust your gut and stick to your morals. In these quiet times, your confidence can plummet, look back at your diary and take time to acknowledge the jobs and achievements you have done in the past year. You will be surprised at how much you have achieved and how far you have come.
10 Learn
A big part of our job is to evolve and with that comes continued learning. Be proactive in your own education. Podcasts are a great free tool to access so much rich information and you can listen to those who you admire and look up to. Once you learn something, it's then time to practice, putting things into practice is the hardest part. Dedicating that time to not be perfect, but feel your way through something.
I hope you have found this helpful. I would love to hear your coping strategies for quieter times. Don’t forget to enjoy this quieter time, you hustle hard! Let me know your thoughts and what you have taken from this.
Love.

Makeup artist interview with Lo Moorcroft
Makeup artists love to know the inside scoop from other fellow makeup artists to learn from how they work and what tips we can pick up. It is a never-ending process of learning! This week we meet Lois Moorcroft, who is a makeup artist I met at MAC cosmetics in the mid 2000’s. Lois is a master of creating beauty looks that inclide impeccable skin and groomed brows to show off the models features.
Makeup artists love to know the inside scoop from other fellow makeup artists to learn from how they work and what tips we can pick up. It is a never-ending process of learning! This week we meet Lo Moorcroft, who is a makeup artist I met at MAC cosmetics in the mid 2000’s. Lois is a master of creating beauty looks that inclide impeccable skin and groomed brows to show off the models features.
How did you start out in makeup?
I always had a passion for creating as a kid, I would make up my own face using my Mums tiny selection of cosmetics and dress up as my childhood alter-ego Patricia. I longed to turn this creativity into a job in my teens and by the time I reached college I fought hard for a place at London College of Fashion on a NHD in Hair, Makeup and Fashion Styling. On leaving college I was so honoured to get a job with MAC where I quickly worked my way up to a role as Resident Trainer. I loved the brand and it's ethos so much that I stayed for almost 10 years. In 2013 I left to focus on my freelance career and haven't looked back since. I've worked on major fashion campaigns and runway shows and countless editorials; I've worked in music, TV, red carpet the list goes on... Ha!
A day in the life of...What does an average day consist of?
The one thing that I love most about my job is its unpredictability, no two days are the same!
What is your signature style in your work? Is this your favourite thing to do in makeup?
Now that's a tough one! It's constantly changing and evolving and with so much influence and my passion for research, I'm always changing my mind. The signature style I would say is seamless makeup, I love beauty looks but I'm definitely from the less is more camp! Enhancing a face with makeup and its tranformative and subtle quality is truly very inspiring to me.
Your favourite products :
Skincare Caudalie Beauty Elixir
Foundation Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturiser
Concealer Cle De Peau Beaute Radiant Concealer
Mascara Maybelline Push Up Drama
Eyeshadow Golightly by Stila
Eyeliner Coffee by MAC
Lip product MAC Retro Matte Lipsticks
Brush Tush brushes, No 8 and No 32 are my faves!
What should every woman own in her makeup bag?
Eyelash Curlers and lip balm
What's your advice to someone wanting to be a makeup artist?
Don't skip the basics, it's so easy to get caught up in the creativity. Understanding the basic structure of the face and how to transform it will make your more creative work really stand out.
What’s been your OMG wake me up, pinch me am I dreaming moment?
Working on my first show as a freelancer knowing all my hard work and my own ability had got me there.
Scenario: You have arrived at a job, your case has gone missing at the airport. You have 15mins to grab essentials. What are your 5 essentials do you pick up to complete the look?
When you breakdown any makeup look there will always be a few key things that stand out and are truly visible. Pick the things that have the most impact. I remember a MAC show where MUA Topolino had been rumoured to have bought only a mascara, vaseline and palette of cream paintsticks, I loved that. It's so easy to get really excited about specific products, but it can really limit your creativity.
How do you like to organise your kit?
Very, very, very specific about how my kit looks. I'm so obsessed with where things go, and what product goes in which case. I have a very small kit by comparison. I have a small vanity that contains all my beauty essential, which I like to call my everyday bag, a skincare bag, a hygiene bag for tissues, cotton pads etc and a colour bag and that's pretty much it.
What trend should be left behind in 2019?
Everyone looks exactly the same.....
Where can we follow you online? @lomoorcroft I do make-up stories every Monday on my Instagram account, I spent most of my time posting to IG!
Thank you for your time and sharing with us Lois, it is greatly appreciated!

Building your makeup kit: Top 10 skincare essentials
Here is a break down of my top 10 skincare essentials to have in a makeup artist kit. Whatever the skin type it needs to be flawless for the job
Skincare is the starting point of ANY makeup application and it's my job as a makeup artist to help clients achieve beautiful flawless skin whatever the skin type. Skin is a makeup artists canvas, so having an understanding of skin is essential and being able to use skincare effectively will allow for the makeup to look it's best; this is an integral part of our job.
Products must be applied deliberately to have an effect on the texture, hydration, clarity and brightness of the skin. How it is applied also counts, from pressing product in, to knowing how to layer products from lighter to heavier textures and giving a message to structure the face through lymphatic drainage and give a radiance to the skin.
Here are my go-to essentials that stay well stocked in my kit
1 Bioderma Sensibio H2O Pump Reverse
The must-have cleanser that now has a handy pump! This is always my step one, ensuring skin is clean and any previous makeup remnants are removed, I am sure you are all too familiar with stubborn mascara- oh the joys of removing it.
This swiped over the skin with cotton releases a glowing complexion! It grabs on to dry skin texture and kindly removes it leaving a glowing radiant skin. Models and clients alike live busy lives which can show on the skin this gets rid of any visible dryness effortlessly. For super dry parts around the nose or between the brows use with a cotton bud or sponge for extra friction.
Post-cleanse this will be your first step, to spritz and drench the skin. It gives instant radiance and allows products following it to absorb readily into the skin. As a side note, the smell instantly relaxes you with is signature peppermint oil scent.
This will calm any redness or irritation by soothing and cooling all while hydrating. Makeup artists do not always have access to running water this is a good product to have on hand whether you need to cleanse the skin or dampen your beauty blender and sheer product textures.
5 Hada Labo Tokyo Anti-Aging Lotion - Super Hydrator
This lightweight serum is packed with 4 types of hyaluronic acid. The unique formulation helps to hydrate dry and dehydrated skin and works on all skin types! I use this on pretty much everyone, it's one of the key ingredients for glowing skin.
This is a rich emollient based formula that must be warmed up before application to ensure great for a normal to dry skin. I generally apply this to the outer parameters of the face using remnants of the product on the t zone area. Skinfood is the perfect multitasker as it also creates a beautiful highlight for a dewy non-glitter look. Ensure to warm this up well in your hands before application as the formula has a high viscosity.
This balm gives smooth skin texture as well as tackling oil on the skin so great for grooming or a no-makeup makeup look! It gives a matte texture that allows you to layer products on top.
8 La Roche posay CICAPLAST BAUME B5 soothing repair
This is suitable for super sensitive or great for those who have eczema, broken out or have acne have dryness in areas, it’s a gentle formula that doesn't irritate the skin. It sticks everything down that cannot be removed and allows you to apply other products on top.
This caffeine and silicone infused formula works wonders as smoothing and depuffing under the eyes. It works its magic under the eyes in a few minutes. I also like to use this as a corrector on a cotton bud or a makeup brush to edit makeup as it doesn't leave a smudge it simply lifts the product off the skin.
10 Boirion Homeoplasmine Ointment
A great matte lip balm that I use when doing grooming or to layer on top of a matte lipstick. This is also great for any irritations on the skin as it soothes, yet isn't shiny or oily and is fragrance-free!
Here is a shopable link that has all the products in one place. There are so many more products that are amazing, I love skincare and I am always exploring new formulas and products. It is all a science and I liken it to cooking, every ingredient has a specific purpose that can impact the final result. I would love to hear what skincare heroes you use in your makeup kit. Let me know what area of my kit I should share with you!
10 tips to be a great makeup artist assistant
Here is a break down of my top 10 tips to be a great makeup assistant. I have been lucky enough to work on many different jobs with a whole range of makeup artists from Alex Box, Andrew Gallimore to James Molloy and Val Garland.
Here is a break down of my top 10 tips to be a great makeup assistant. I have been lucky enough to work on many different jobs with a whole range of makeup artists from Alex Box, Andrew Gallimore to James Molloy, Pat McGrath and Val Garland.
So much more can be learnt from assisting than a youtube video or makeup course could ever teach you. Each artist has a different way, a preference of how they work and what they want or need from you.
1. Communication. Introduce your self to the team on set and be happy to help not only the makeup artist but others too, whether it's doing a coffee run, being the wind machine or holding hair for the hair stylist. Gestures of kindness go a longway! Establish with the makeup artist and check what they would like you to do, or how they like things done as you are there to make their life easier, not harder. Ask if you aren't sure before you rearrange things. Listen to what they say to you and act on that.
2. Your job. As an assistant will be to support the makeup artist in keeping their station organised, anticipating that they may need product wise, buying more product, prepping models and touching up. Also supporting them if they need any help with decisions if they want it.
3. Be early. Try to be 10-15 minutes early to all jobs. It is displaying a professional etiquette and shows your dedication. A lot of studios can be tricky to find and not on city mapper or google maps so give yourself time so you can arrive relaxed and focused. I will wait outside or by the entrance ready to greet and help the makeup artist I am assisting.
4. Kit. Most of the time when assisting you will only require your brushes, set bag, hygiene and brush cleaner. Always DOUBLE check the notes on the call sheet or email the agency or makeup artist as on rare occasion you will be asked to bring a basic kit or other specific items.
5. Social media. This is not your gig, a lot of the time it is not OK to post anything about what you are doing. If anything, be vague 'I'm on a fun job today bts with my coffee' do not give any details. Again ask if you aren't sure. This isn't your gig, also avoid being on your phone the whole time, be alert and ready with whats going on.
6. Ego. Keep your ego in check, this is about you being an invaluable extra pair of hands to someone. Whatever your previous experience may be, you are there to help them. Nothing about this job is about you! Mistakes happen and also remember you aren't always someone's cup of tea and that ok too!
7. Flexible. Many jobs are last minute, so be prepared to cancel your plans you may have. Always have your kit and brushes clean at the ready. A lot of the time you get one chance to prove yourself with the potential to be asked back. Be ready for some feedback, it might not be what you want to hear but keep your chin up and take what is said on board and move on!
8. Research. Ensure you are clued up with the makeup artist that you are assisting work. It's also worth having a look on the call sheet and googling who the photographer, model, the hairstylist are to give you an idea of their work.
9. Be ready. Onset be ready and use your initiative! Know the breakdowns of timings, ie what time the model is needed and ask what will be needed for a set bag. Keep pots with names and key products if you are working with multiple models.
10. Pay. Assisting work tends to be free early on in your career. Think of it as exchanging your time to learn about the industry rather than paying money to learn from a makeup artist course. Once you have built a relationship with the artist you will more than likely to be doing paid jobs even potentially become their first assistant.
That is assisting in a nutshell. There is so much to it and its the best place to learn such a wealth of knowledge. It is a segway into your career as a makeup artist and so valuable to you. Let me know how you find assisting and good luck in your career!

Building your makeup kit: Top 5 Mascaras for your kit
Makeup artists love to know the inside scoop from other fellow makeup artists to learn from how they work and what tips we can pick up. It is a never-ending process of learning! This week we discuss the essential mascaras that every makeup artist should have in their kit!
Mascara is an essential part of a makeup artist kit to create different effects, each has its significant purpose! When using mascara in your kit, most of the time the brush that it comes with is irrelevant mainly due to the fact that you will be using hygienic practices ( if you don't know what I mean by this please ask) unless you are using a new one and giving it to your client each time.
5 Volume Effet Faux Cils 2 brown, YSL
Brown, the unsung hero for beauty work to create a softly defined lash look. This contains nylon fibres to bulk up the lashes, the formula coats the lashes to provide a lengthening curl whilst when dry leaves the lash flexible.
The formula provides serious volume and curl - it has polymers that shrink as it dries which holds a curl seriously well. It is quick and easy to use as it has an instant effect and the formula suitable for vegans.
3 Velvet Noir Major Volume, Marc Jacobs
This mascara provides MAYOR volume and is densely pigmented. It gives the illusion of oversized, false lashes effortlessly! The lashes look like they are coated in luxurious velvet.
2 Haute & Naughty, Mac Cosmetics
This is a creamy, velvety formula that allows you to apply as little or as much as you want to. The formula is lightweight and gives a soft feathery lash, whilst being able to build and layer generously. For personal use this a great option as it has two openings to the product which allows a natural or volume with a dramatic application of the product.
1 Extended play, Mac Cosmetics
Do not be put off by the teeny tube, this is a waterproof formula with tubing technology that comes off with warm water. It creates beautifully defined lashes and is a lightweight formula that holds a curl well 💪
There you have it my essential mascara wardrobe of what I use in my kit. I want to side note that you do not require all of these, however having options always helps in your kit to provide the best product for the job.
Spy any mutual faves in there….What are your favourite mascaras that you use in your kit? Let me know in the comments below

This week we meet Hannah Kemp, who is a makeup artist I met at MAC cosmetics. Hannah creates colourful, glamorous makeup looks.
How did you start out in makeup?
I was in college studying fine art and found myself wanting to create art on faces...that’s when my ideas and aspiration to become a makeup artist started...I began practising on my friends then finally decided to take a makeup and hair design course to increase my level of expertise and knowledge. When I got the job at MAC you (Lisa) were the one who took my trade test in MAC Southampton?! I don’t know if you remember (Of course I remember!)
A day in the life of...What does an average day consist of?
I work Monday to Friday in probably the coolest office ever at Spectrum Brushes HQ. I help with customer queries most of the time and occasionally create makeup tutorials for their social media which is super fun and I love the variety!
What is your signature style in your work or is this your favourite thing to do in makeup?
I would definitely say WARM toned eyeshadow, whether that be supernatural and subtle or bright orange I always persuade the client to add a hint of warmth in their routine, could be a little bronzer through the socket or a peachy cheek. I’m always rocking an orange eye myself.
Name your favourite products :
Skincare: Alpha H liquid gold
Foundation: Armani luminous silk
Concealer: Tarte shape tape
Mascara: MAC extended play
Eyeshadow: palette would be Morphe single would be MAC rule
Eyeliner: MAC Costa Riche
Lip product: MAC pure zen
Brush: Spectrum B06 blending brush
What should every woman own in her makeup bag?
MAC fix +
What's your advice to someone wanting to be a makeup artist?
Practice on every single skin tone, type, age, EVERYONE. This will help them overcome challenges along the way. Practice different types of makeup, not everyone will want the same look AND just experience in general, watch other working makeup artists and research online!
What’s been your OMG wake me up, pinch me am I dreaming moment?
Working for Spectrum Collections, being able to still create makeup and linking that to my love of social media whilst still working with customers. I worked on my first shoot with them was so amazing. I sometimes wonder how I even fell into it!
What is the greatest challenge you have overcome in your career?
Leaving MAC cosmetics. It was scary because it was all I ever knew. It was my comfort zone and I was scared if I left I couldn’t find anything better. Turns out it was the best decision I ever made BUT MAC truly shaped me as an artist and I wouldn’t be the makeup artist I am today without them!
Scenario: You have arrived at a job, your case has gone missing at the airport. You have 15mins to grab essentials. What are your 5 essentials do you pick up to complete the look?
1. Moisturiser 2. Concealer 3. Brow pencil 4. Mascara 5. Lipstick for lips & cheek & eye 😂 this is so hard!!!!!
How do you like to organise your kit?
In clear bags, so I can see everything. Then In category’s of foundations, skincare, etc
What trend should be left behind in 2019?
Using bright orange concealer when you have lighter skin!!!!!!
Where can we follow you online?

How to make your makeup kit more eco-friendly
We all have our part to play in being more conscious about the environment, as the smallest actions we all take to have a bigger impact than we may realise. As a makeup artist, I am trying to convert to better working practices to be more eco-friendly whilst keeping my kit organised and hygienic. These are the initial steps I have taken to convert my kit.
1 Microfibre Cloths. These are my most recent kit addition, I purchased a pack of 10 microfibre cloths to replace wipes with enough to rotate and wash regularly. They can be used to wash the face or clean brushes on a job instead of tissues. Such a genius simple switch don't you think!
2 Travel tissues. I switched from purchasing the travel plastic packets to buying a regular box of tissues, unpacking them and placing them in this refillable tissue pouch by My Kit Co. It is wonderful as I can squish the packet down and it takes up barely any room in my kit. I use tissues sparingly and try to opt for reusable options where possible, eg blotting lips or mattifying a lip through tissue.
3 Mascara fan brush. Disposable wands are the generally made of 2 types of plastic so switching to a mascara fan brush is a big one and nearly impossible to sanitise! Fan brushes allow for much more control and ease to get close to the root of the lash. This tool is one of the long-standing eco components of my kit.
4 Brow grooming. Another tool to replace the disposable mascara wand are these My Kit Co brow groomer and teaser. After filling in your eyebrows brush them upwards to soften the effect and blend in brow product with nothing to throw away.
5 Paper cotton buds. I haven't purchased plastic stemmed buds for many years. These are the selection I use in my kit to cover me to edit or remove effectively! These Superdrug ones have 2 different shaped ends, a pointed and a curved which are my go-to for an effortless smudge. Muji’s offering are great for editing detail or getting rid of stubborn makeup remains in the lashes.
For mayor precision, I opt for these on-point buds by My Kit Co, which will aid you create the sharpest liner EVER.
6 Reusable microfibre/cotton/bamboo pads. Face Halo works with either cold or warm water to remove makeup efficienlty and effortlessly. The water loosens your makeup allowing the fibre strands to remove and trap makeup, giving your skin an invigorating clean in half the time. These can replace up to 500 wipes. Face Halo believes in sustainable beauty and are available to recycle which is pure genius.
The babmboo rounds are a more familiar texture to the traditional cotton pad, pass the micellar were ready to cleanse...
Remember to have a watertight bag in which to transport used wet pads hygienically, I like to repurpose my Glossier pink zip-lock bag as its super chic.
7 Olive soap to shampoo clean brushes. I prefer a bar of olive soap so that I can rub my brushes directly onto the bar of soap and then rinse. I do this at the end of a job at let them air dry 🧼 My brushes remain soft and conditioned this way. I felt super chuffed with myself when I found out the legendary Tom Pecheux uses Olive soap to keep his tools in tip-top condition.
8 Recycle your empties. This might be something that a lot of people skip. At the end of your job that last thing you want to do its take empties home, however, you shoud keep a hold of that plastic or glass empty product and recycle it ♻️ There are many brands that offer to recycle so take advantage of being rewarded for this habit. MAC Cosmetics, for example, has a Back To MAC initiative, where customers can bring in six lipstick tubes to be recycled by the brand and receive one lipstick for free in return.
Here is some extra information about recycling makeup in the UK.
9 Paper Straws. The straw is an underrated item to have in your kit, I made the switch from plastic to paper straws good year or so ago🥤 I stash them in my tissue bag and they are so handy on set to keep your model hydrated and that lip perfect!
10 Towel. I feel like this is a fairly obvious one. I always lay a towel under my kit working area, rather than tissues which are purely wasteful. I have seen so many towels in my day and I have quite a collection from many brands I have worked with at fashion weeks, MAC, Maybelline, NARs and purchased from My Kit Co. The best towel I have seen (yes I am that much of a geek I look at these sorts of things) when assiting a makeup artist was her Leopard print towels, SO cool!
I hope you have enjoyed these tips and have found them helpful. If we together, commit to making these small changes in the way we work, when we all participate the results of this quickly and significantly accumulate in turn that help us live in a better world now and for future generations. Please comment below if you have any points to add I would love to hear them! Thank you for reading
